BEFORE YOU SPEND £30,000 — The Truth About Training With The C.H.E.K Institute
By Scott Bryant — Level 5 Master C.H.E.K Practitioner (2013)
THE £400-PER-HOUR MYTH
A QUALIFICATION VALUED BY NO-ONE BUT THEM
Here’s the hard truth: their certification is not recognised by any government, educational body, or professional organisation anywhere in the world. Not Ofqual, not REPs, not CIMSPA — nobody. It has value only within their own private system.
Paul Chek himself studied NASM to become a personal trainer in America — a legitimate, recognised qualification. Yet he publicly slates NASM and claims they copied his work. If your own qualification is superior — why did you need theirs? And getting angry when someone copies your work? That’s not theft — that’s flattery. Great ideas spread naturally.
Much of what Paul teaches is adapted from other books and established methods. He tested them, refined them — fair enough. But claiming it’s entirely original and getting annoyed when others use similar principles? That doesn’t add up.
SWISS BALLS, SAFETY, AND REAL-WORLD STANDARDS
FROM 6 YEARS TO 3 — WATERED DOWN, ONLINE, AND UNCHECKED
The program used to take 6 years to complete. Now it’s 3 years — and much of it is online. You cannot learn palpation, muscle release, or correct form through a screen. You need hands-on guidance, feedback, and correction. Online training means you’re essentially guessing whether you’re doing it right — and so will your clients.
At £327 per month for 3 years — that’s roughly £12,132 before you add travel, accommodation, and course materials. Over £30,000 total is easily spent. That money could fund a mortgage, a car, holidays, good food — or recognised qualifications that employers actually respect.
• “C.H.E.K Practitioner” — searched only 12 times per month globally
• “Personal Trainer” — searched 45,000 times per month
Being “elite” means nothing if your potential clients don’t even know you exist. Your clients don’t come to you because of a certificate on your wall. They come because of who you are, how you treat them, and the results you get. A piece of paper never made anyone a better trainer — experience, empathy, and results do.
COMPARE THE OPTIONS
The Charles Poliquin system produces tangible results people actually want: fat loss, strength, better body composition. Charles trained and helped over 250 athletes — that’s documented. Paul Chek claims to have trained the American Army boxing team — yet there is no verifiable evidence anywhere. His mentor passed away and Paul never renewed his massage license — not since 2014. Gavin Jennings hasn’t renewed his Level 4 status since 2019. Matt Walden, Lee Brandon, Gavin Jennings — none were Level 5 Masters until I started posting publicly. Within two weeks? Suddenly they all were. Convenient, isn’t it?
THE “TOOLBOX” TRAP — OR WHY YOU NEVER FEEL ENOUGH
They tell you: “You’re good, but you don’t have enough tools in your toolbox.” It sounds helpful. It sounds like they’re raising your standard. What it actually means is: “You’re not good enough until you pay us more money.”
There’s no point having 100 tools if you only use 5. Master what serves your clients — that’s worth more than any certificate.
THE “FAMILY” THAT KICKS YOU OUT
They call themselves a “spiritual family.” But here’s what really happens:
• I reached Level 5 Master Practitioner in 2013 — was removed from CHEK Connect so no-one could find me
• In 13 years, I received ONE referral from CEO Gavin Jennings
• You’re told to bring your own clients — yet encouraged to refer high-value ones to Paul himself
• Question anything? You’re ostracised, blocked, and spoken about publicly in classes
• Faculty members defend the system publicly while privately it’s a different story
• A £60 annual license fee — generating roughly £4.5 million per year — yet nobody outside the system ever asks to see it
They say it’s not a cult. But what do you call a group that silences critics, controls your professional network, cuts off your referrals, and publicly defames anyone who questions them? That’s exactly what a cult does.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The methods themselves? Some do work — I’ve used them. But you are paying £30,000+ for qualifications that no employer, insurer, or professional body recognises. Ring any gym and ask: “Do you accept CHEK qualifications?” The answer will be no. You need a Level 2/3 Diploma in Personal Training — the standard, recognised qualification that actually gets you hired.
If they ran things properly, I wouldn’t have a story to tell. If they hadn’t attacked me over 119 times, I wouldn’t be writing this. If they respected their practitioners instead of silencing them, this blog wouldn’t exist.
Do your research. Ask the hard questions. Call the gyms. Check the recognition. And remember: your worth as a trainer is measured in the lives you change — not the courses you bought.

One-to-one coaching with Paul Chek — not up to standard
Would I do it again? Definitely not.
